What it means
The EGR system recirculates a measured dose of exhaust into the intake to cool combustion and cut NOx emissions. P0401 means the computer commanded EGR flow and didn't see the expected response — the passages, the valve, or the sensor watching them isn't delivering. Carbon buildup is the usual villain.

You can drive on it, but don't shelve it: without EGR, combustion runs hotter, and on many engines that invites pinging (detonation) under load — the kind of thing that shortens an engine's life quietly. It will also fail an emissions test. Plan the fix in weeks, not months.
