Using ScanMyCar

ScanMyCar is a powerful window into what your car is doing — but it's an informational assistant, not a mechanic. Please read these terms before you rely on it.

The one to remember: ScanMyCar helps you understand what your vehicle is reporting. It is not a substitute for inspection or repair by a qualified professional, and you use it at your own risk. When in doubt about a fault, or before making a repair decision, consult a licensed mechanic.

Acceptance of these terms

By downloading or using the ScanMyCar app ("the app"), you agree to these Terms of Use. If you don't agree, please don't use the app. These terms are between you and ScanMyCar ("we", "us").

What ScanMyCar is

ScanMyCar reads data your vehicle exposes through its standard OBD-II port using a compatible Bluetooth adapter, displays live sensor readings, reads and can clear diagnostic trouble codes, and offers an optional AI assistant that explains readings and codes in plain language. It is a diagnostic and educational tool for your own vehicle.

Informational assistant — not professional advice

The readings, code explanations, urgency ratings, and AI responses in the app are for general information and educational purposes. They are not professional mechanical, safety, legal, or emissions advice, and they do not create a mechanic-customer relationship.

Vehicles differ, sensors and adapters can be inaccurate or fail, and a single code rarely tells the whole story. Always use your own judgment, and rely on a qualified professional for diagnosis and repair decisions — especially anything affecting your safety or the safe operation of the vehicle.

Reading and clearing trouble codes

The app can clear diagnostic trouble codes and reset the check-engine light. Please do this with care and understanding:

  • Clearing a code does not fix the underlying problem. If the cause remains, the code — and the light — will usually return.
  • Clearing codes also resets emissions readiness monitors and erases freeze-frame data, which can affect an inspection or a professional's ability to diagnose the fault. Your vehicle may need to be driven through several cycles before it is inspection-ready again.
  • Turning off a warning light without addressing the fault can hide a genuine problem. You are responsible for deciding whether it is appropriate and safe to clear a code.

AI features

The AI features are part of the ScanMyCar Pro subscription (see Free tier and Pro). The assistant is powered by a third-party service (Google Gemini) and works as described in our Privacy Policy. AI responses can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and may not reflect your specific vehicle. Treat them as a knowledgeable starting point, verify anything important, and never act on an AI response in a way that could compromise safety without confirming it. AI features require a network connection and may be unavailable, rate-limited, or changed at any time.

Safe use while driving

Do not interact with the app in a way that distracts you from driving. Mount your device safely, set up gauges and alerts before you set off, and keep your attention on the road. Voice alerts are a convenience, not a safety system — they may be delayed, silenced by your device, or fail to trigger, and you must not rely on them to keep you or your vehicle safe. You are solely responsible for operating your vehicle safely and for obeying all traffic and distracted-driving laws.

Adapters and third-party hardware

ScanMyCar works with third-party OBD-II adapters that we do not make or sell. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, quality, or safety of any adapter. Compatibility and the set of available readings vary by adapter and by vehicle make, model and year. Follow your adapter maker's instructions and your vehicle manufacturer's guidance.

No warranty

The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, accurate for your vehicle, or that it will detect or correctly interpret any given condition.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, vehicle damage, repair costs, failed inspections, or personal injury, arising out of or relating to your use of — or inability to use — the app, whether based on warranty, contract, tort, or any other legal theory. You use the app and act on its information at your own risk. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.

Free tier and the ScanMyCar Pro subscription

The scanner itself is free: live gauges, sensors, drive logging, and reading and clearing trouble codes do not require a purchase. ScanMyCar Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription (offered monthly and yearly) that adds the AI features — the assistant chat, health check, ride analysis, and tailored sensor ranges — plus extras such as HUD mode, performance timers, Mode 06 deep tests, dashboard customization, and CSV export.

  • Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through your App Store account; we never see or store your payment details, and no account with us is required. Prices are shown in the app before you buy and may vary by region.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically until canceled in your App Store subscription settings, at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Apple's own refund and cancellation policies apply.
  • Use "Restore Purchases" in the app to bring an existing subscription onto a new or reset device. Family Sharing is supported.

We may change the app's features, availability, or pricing in the future; any such change will apply going forward and will be communicated through the app or the App Store.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, note them in the app's release notes. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised terms. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Mississippi, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, except where your local consumer-protection laws provide otherwise.
